Concrete Railway Sleepers for Sale
Concrete railway sleepers are the indispensable components in modern railway track structures. It is made of high-strength concrete. They are divided into reinforced concrete railway sleepers and prestressed concrete railway sleepers. Compared to wooden railway sleepers, concrete railway sleepers have a long service life, stable structure, and strong fire resistance. It is especially suitable for high-speed, heavy-haul railway lines and harsh environments. Provides a solid supporting foundation for the track.
As an expert in the railway field. AGICO is not only a manufacturer of high-quality concrete railway sleepers, but we also offer a comprehensive railway sleeper solution. Including wooden railway sleepers, plastic railway sleepers, composite railway sleepers, and concrete railway sleepers. To meet the diverse needs of our customers.
- Long service life
- High load-bearing capacity
- Good fire resistance
- Low cost
Core Advantages of Concrete Railway Sleepers
Long service life
Concrete railway sleepers have strong corrosion resistance and fire resistance. Unaffected by weather and environment. The service life is around 50 years. Reduced the frequency of repairs and replacements.
High load-bearing capacity
Concrete railway sleepers are heavy. It can provide longitudinal and lateral drag for the track. Therefore, it can withstand the impact and load generated when a high-speed train passes by.
Good fire resistance
The material of concrete is non-flammable. It can effectively prevent track fires caused by brake sparks, open fires, or accidental fires. It has effectively improved railway safety, especially in forested areas.
Low cost
Although concrete railway sleepers have high initial investment costs. However, it has a long lifespan and requires no anti-corrosion treatment or straightening work. Therefore, the overall cost is relatively low, making it very economical.
Classification of Concrete Railway Sleepers
Wooden railway sleepers are based on their position and function in the railway track system. There are mainly three types of wooden sleepers in railway: wooden railway sleepers for switches and wooden railway sleepers for bridges.
Prestressed concrete railway sleepers
Prestressed concrete railway sleepers are the most commonly used and advanced type of railway sleepers made of concrete. Before pouring concrete. First, apply tensile stress to the internal steel reinforcement. Release the tension after the concrete has hardened. At this point, the retraction of the reinforcing steel applies a pre-stress to the concrete.
- Good crack resistance: It can effectively resist the tensile stress generated by train loads and is less prone to cracking.
- Save steel: Compared to ordinary steel concrete railway sleepers, prestressed concrete railway sleepers use less steel.
- High strength: It has a smaller cross-section and is relatively lighter, but has a stronger load-bearing capacity. It can adapt to higher speeds and greater axle loads.
Reinforced concrete railway sleepers
Reinforced concrete railway sleepers are made by embedding ordinary steel bars as a skeleton into concrete. The steel reinforcement and concrete share the load. The steel bars were not tensioned beforehand. Currently, it is mainly used for some secondary lines, station lines, or specific areas where the load-bearing requirements are not high.
- Simple process: Reinforcing concrete railway sleepers omits the two complex steps of tensioning and releasing.
- Simple process: Reinforcing concrete railway sleepers omits the two complex steps of tensioning and releasing.
- Slightly poor durability: Reinforcing steel concrete railway sleepers have poor tensile strength, which may lead to cracking and lower durability.
Production of Concrete Railway Sleepers
- Main raw materials:
We selected high-strength cement as the cementing material. Ensure that the sleepers harden quickly and have good compressive strength. Then we select high-quality aggregates that meet the requirements. Forming a dense and solid concrete matrix. High-strength steel bars serve as the internal stress framework. It is key to resisting the enormous tensile stress of the train and providing crack resistance. Finally, add scientifically formulated additives. This gives concrete railway sleepers greater strength and freeze-thaw resistance.
- Core manufacturing process:
1. Prestressing tensioning: Before pouring concrete, the high-strength steel wire is tensioned to the predetermined stress value according to the design requirements. This is a crucial step in forming prestress.
2. Concrete pouring: The raw materials are weighed precisely according to the strict mixing ratio. High-performance concrete is produced at the mixing plant. The concrete is then poured into the mold using automated equipment.
3. Steam curing: The completed concrete railway sleepers are then placed into the steam curing chamber. Under high temperature and high humidity conditions, the strength of concrete can be rapidly increased. It typically reaches over 70% of the design strength within 8-12 hours.
4. Release and demold: Once the concrete reaches the specified strength, the tension of the prestressed steel wires is slowly released. At this point, the steel wire retracts, and its stress is transferred to the concrete through the bonding force. Then, the formed sleeper is removed from the mold.
5. Finished product inspection: Each sleeper after demolding needs to undergo rigorous inspection. This includes checking the appearance and dimensions, and observing surface cracks. Samples were then taken for strength testing and fatigue testing.

Limitations of Concrete Railway Sleepers
1. Large weight
Concrete railway sleepers are relatively heavy. This is beneficial for track stability, but you need heavy machinery during transportation and laying. This increases construction complexity and initial costs.
2. Stiffness and elasticity
Concrete railway sleepers have high rigidity, which will lead to a decrease in overall elasticity. This reduces the track’s ability to absorb vibrations and noise.
3. Brittleness and damage
Concrete railway sleepers have high compressive strength but low tensile strength. It is prone to cracking or breaking when subjected to extreme impacts.
Maintenance of Concrete Railway Sleepers
1. Regular inspection: Regularly inspect concrete railway sleepers for cracks. For minor damage, use a repair agent to fix it; for severe damage, replace it promptly.
2. Check fastener system: Concrete railway sleepers are structurally stable; the focus is on rail fastening systems. Includes spring clips, bolts, and washers. Make sure they are in the correct installation position and that they are securely fastened.
3. Ensure the condition of the track bed: Whether concrete railway sleepers can perform effectively depends on the condition of the track bed beneath them. The track bed is tamped regularly using a rail tamping machine. Ensure that the railway sleeper has adequate support underneath.
