Do You Have A Railway Project We Can Help With?
About AGICO Rail Spike
- What is Screw Spike
Screw spike is medium or large metal screw used to fasten rail base plates or rails, such screw spike is always secured in holes drilled in the sleepers, sometimes with embedded plastic dowel, usually used on rails with wooden sleepers. Screw spike can vary in thread profile, length, diameter and drive head depending on specific geographic requirements. Screw spike can be divided into four types, including Ss series sleeper Screw, square head screw spike, hexagon screw spike, and double-head screw spike.
- What is Dog Spike
Dog spike is a large nail with an offset head used to secure rails and base plates to sleepers in the track. dog spike is roughly chisel-shaped with flat-edged tips. The edge and grain of the dog spike is driven in the opposite direction when driven into the sleeper, which provides greater fastening capacity. The main function of the dog spike is to maintain the gauge of the steel rail. Dog Spike provides a strong, simple and affordable solution for securing rails.
- Dog Spike VS Screw Spike
Dog spikes and screw spikes are the two most common types of rail spikes produced by AGICO, which are small parts used to secure rail fastening systems. Generally speaking, screw spikes are mainly used for heavy rail applications and dog spikes are used for light rail applications.
The dog spike was first invented in 1832. It is named for its two lugs on both sides, which are shaped like a dog’s head. Its size is similar to that of a spiral spike, with a radius dog nail flange, which can directly fix the rail to the sleeper.
While screw spikes first appeared in 1860, they are more popular than dog spikes because of their greater holding force, about twice that of dog spike, and the ability to combine with spring washers. But even though screw spikes are more expensive to manufacture than dog spikes, screw spikes are less expensive to maintain.
- Quality Inspection of AGICO Rail Spike
- 1. The first is to check the shape of the head screw. Mold trial is the most important link in the forming process of screw spike. A good mold is the prerequisite for making good screw spike.
- 2. The next step is to check the production machine of the screw spike, which is conducive to safe and smooth production.
- 3. The formed screw spike should be checked for burrs and its exact size should be measured.
- 4. Thread detection. The detection of thread pitch should also meet the requirements of customers and international standards.
- 5. The last step is the screw spike shipment inspection. Pick out the unqualified screw spike, and then leave the best quality screw spike to customers.

Corrosion Factors and Protective Measures of Rail Spike
- Effect of relative humidity: Relative humidity refers to the humidity of the atmosphere. Generally speaking, the higher the relative humidity, the easier it is for the surface of railway screw spikes to form a water film, and the longer the water film lasts, the more likely it is for atmospheric corrosion to occur.
- Effect of temperature: The change of temperature, that is, the existence of temperature difference, has a great influence on atmospheric corrosion. For example, because the rail spike is in an outdoor environment, the temperature changes between hot and cold day and night may cause water vapor to condense on the metal surface to form a water film, thereby accelerating corrosion.
- Effect of dust particles: when a train passes by, it increases the presence of dust particles. These dust particles accelerate corrosion when they land on ferrous metal surfaces. When the particles are large, they will form crevices with the iron metal surface, which will also cause crevice corrosion.
- Regularly apply a protective coating to rail spike: Severe convective weather, thunderstorm weather, high temperature and high pressure environment and many other conditions will lead to a decline in the quality, shape, strength, durability and other aspects of the screw spike itself.
- Regular inspections: it is necessary to set up special personnel to conduct inspections in road sections where the environment changes rapidly. Preventing problems with screw spikes during use. In this way, the role of railway spikes in railway transportation can be better guaranteed.
