Australian Standard Rail
The common types of Australian standard rail are AS 31, AS 47, AS 50, AS 60, AS 68, AS 73, AS 86, and AS 89. These include light rails, heavy rails, and high-performance rails. The rails of different weights and performance are suitable for various application scenarios. Choosing the right types can ensure the safety and reliability of railways.
1. AS 31: AS 31 is a lightweight Australian standard rail, 31 kg per meter. It is mainly used for branch lines or low-speed railways. It is rarely used on modern mainline railways due to limited weighing capacity.
2. AS 47, AS 50: AS 47 and AS 50 are medium-weight Australian standard rail. They are used for some local railways, freight branches, and passenger branches in Australia. They can meet the needs of medium-speed railways.
3. AS 60, AS 68: AS 60 and AS 68 are heavy Australian standard rails; they weigh 60 kg and 68 kg per meter. They are the most mainstream rail standard. AS 60 is widely used in passenger and freight trunk lines with medium and high traffic volume; it has high strength and durability. AS 68 is widely used in heavy-haul railway; it can withstand higher axle loads and transport volumes, longer service life, and reduced maintenance frequency.
4. AS 73, AS 86, AS 89: they types are the heaviest Australian standard rail, they have high performance. They are made of a special alloy composition and heat treatment process, and possess higher hardness, wear resistance, and fatigue resistance. They are suitable for use in the most severely worn areas of heavy-haul railways – curved sections. And they can provide higher smoothness and stability to the track.

Australian Standard Rail Design and Technology
- Materials and Processes
The main materials of Australian standard rail are 900A and 1100. 900A represents rails with a tensile strength of not less than 900 MPa. It uses a controlled cooling process, and the rail forms a uniform and fine pearlite structure during the cooling process after rolling. And balanced strength, toughness, and economy. 1100 represents rails with a tensile strength of not less than 1100 MPa. It uses an online heat treatment process. The rail head is rapidly quenched and then tempered. The rails have ultra-high hardness and strength.
- Rail Welding Technology
There are two main rail welding technologies: flash butt welding and thermite welding. Flash butt welding for factory rail welding, this technology makes the weld strong, the internal quality stable, and the efficiency high. The rails are welded into long rails at the base and then transported to the laying site. Aluminothermic welding for on-site rail welding requires no external power supply, simple equipment, and is very suitable for mobile operations in the field and on the line.
- Seamless Line
Through the above welding technologies, multiple rails can be welded into seamless lines of hundreds or even thousands of meters. This can eliminate rail joints and make trains run more smoothly. And avoid the impact of joints on rails and extend the service life of rails.

1. Rail Fastening Systems: Rail fastening systems are the key parts to connecting rails and sleepers. These include rail clips, rail pad, rail shoulder, rail bolt, etc. Rail fastening systems can offer stable buckle pressure, fix the rails firmly on the sleepers to prevent them from shifting due to train operation or thermal expansion and contraction. They have the key role of fixing rail position, maintaining gauge, and providing flexibility.

Maintenance and Management
Rail Grinding
Grinding the rail surface with a rail grinding machine to remove the corrugation and cracks, thereby reducing the noise and vibration of the rails and extending the service life of the rails. Preventive grinding is very important in heavy-haul railways.
Track Geometry Detection
Using an inspection vehicle equipped with laser and inertial navigation systems, parameters such as gauge, level, height, and direction are collected at high frequency. Discover and guide the correction of track irregularities promptly.
Nondestructive Testing
The inside of the rails is scanned regularly using an ultrasonic flaw detection vehicle. Accurately detect defects invisible to the naked eye, such as core damage and transverse fatigue cracks.
Daily Manual Inspection
Inspection personnel should regularly conduct detailed inspections of key areas such as the surface condition of rails, connecting parts, and switches.
