Railway Dog Spikes
Rail dog spike, also known as railway dog spikes or track spike, is a common fastener in the railway fastening system. Rail dog spikes are used to secure rails to the sleepers and used to maintain distance between tracks, ensuring track stability and preventing derailment. The unique design of the rail dog spike makes it widely used in the railway system. The whole shape is L-shaped with a square shank, which enhances the spike’s resistance to pull-out. The bottom of the head of the rail dog spike is inclined to match the shape of the rail edge, which is lower on the sides and higher in the middle. This ensures that the rail dog spike tightly presses against the bottom of the rail, preventing lateral movement of the rail. The tip of the rail dog spike is wedge-shaped rather than pointed. The wedge is driven into the sleeper laterally, parallel to the rail, to prevent longitudinal movement of the rail. Rail dog spikes are usually used with rail tie plates, driven deeply into the sleeper through the holes in the rail tie plate using a hammering method, ensuring a solid structure between the rail and the sleeper.
As a professional manufacturer of railway fastening systems, AGICO not only produces rail dog spikes but also produces other railway fasteners such as elastic rail clips, screw spikes, rail anchor. Rail dog spikes are made of high-quality steel, such as Q235 carbon steel and Q345B carbon steel. Every production process is supervised according to production standards, and every batch of finished products undergoes strict tensile testing and quality inspection. AGICO’s rail dog spikes can be produced according to various standards such as GB, DIN, ISO, ANSI/ASTM, B7, BS, and JIS, meeting the needs of customers in different regions. Customization is available whether it is size, process, or surface coating. Common rail dog spike sizes are 5/8”, 3/8”, 1/2”, and 3/4”. They are usually packed in 200-pound or 50-pound barrels.
Railway Dog Spikes for Sale
5/8'' x 6'' Cut Spike
AGICO’s 5/8” x 6” cut spike has a diameter of 5/8 inches (approximately 15.875mm) and a length of 6 inches (approximately 152.4mm), meeting AREMA standards. Made of high-strength steel, its corrosion resistance and hardness can be enhanced through heat treatment and surface treatment. The design of the railway dog spikes is suitable not only for wooden sleepers but also for concrete sleepers.
3/8'' x 3'' Track Spike
The 3/8” x 3” track spike is a small but powerful railway dog spike with a diameter of 3/8 inches (approximately 9.525mm) and a length of 3 inches (approximately 76.2mm). This shorter railway dog spike is suitable for light-duty railways and light rail systems, such as urban transit or branch lines. Its installation and maintenance are relatively convenient.
3/8'' x 3'' -1/2 Track Spike
The 3/8” x 3” -1/2 track spike has a diameter of 3/8 inches (approximately 9.525mm) and a length of 3.5 inches (approximately 88.9mm), which is 0.5 inches longer than the 3/8X3 track spike. It can embed deeper into the sleeper, and generally, the longer the railway dog spike, the greater the holding force. This type of railway dog spike is suitable for heavy-duty railways, such as industrial railways or mainline railways.
3/8'' x 6'' Boat Spike
The 3/8” x 6” boat spike can be used not only in shipbuilding but also in railway systems, making it very suitable for securing wooden structures. This railway dog spike has a diameter of 3/8 inches (approximately 9.525mm) and a length of 6 inches (approximately 152.4mm). It is generally made of galvanized steel, which can adapt to humid environments, offering strong corrosion resistance and extending its service life.
1/2'' x 10'' Boat Spike
The 1/2” x 10” boat spike has a diameter of 1/2 inches (approximately 12.7mm) and a length of 10 inches (approximately 254mm). It is a larger-sized railway dog spike that can provide deep fastening, with longer length resulting in better fixation. With its significant diameter and length, the railway dog spike offers remarkable fastening effects in railway systems.

Advantages of Railroad Dog Spikes
Powerful Holding Force
The design of railroad dog spikes is quite unique, providing powerful holding force. They can firmly secure the rail to the sleeper, preventing rail displacement. The length can be customized according to customer needs. Generally speaking, the longer the railroad dog spike, the better the holding effect.
Low Cost
Railroad dog spikes are relatively easy to install and maintain. In small-scale projects, they can be driven into sleepers with a pointed hammer; in large-scale projects, hydraulic tools and other machines can be used for quick installation, saving labor costs. Even if damage occurs, they can be quickly replaced, reducing downtime costs.
Corrosion Resistance
Railroad dog spikes are made of high-strength steel and undergo heat treatment and surface treatment during production, such as galvanizing and oil coating. Long-term exposure to outdoor conditions, including high temperatures, low temperatures, and humidity, allows them to maintain their good performance. They have strong corrosion resistance and a long service life.
High Safety
Railroad dog spikes serve as the connection between the rail and the sleeper. The head is designed to be inclined for better adaptation to the rail, preventing lateral movement of the rail and ensuring optimal fastening. The tip of the railroad dog spike is wedge-shaped, driven laterally into the sleeper parallel to the rail, preventing longitudinal movement of the rail.
