Indian Standard Steel Rail

About Indian Standard Steel Rail?

Indian standard rails refer to the rails used in the Indian railway system, with a gauge of 1676 mm (5 feet 6 inches), which is 241 mm wider than the international standard gauge (1435 mm). Indian Standard Rails have been developed to meet the special needs of Indian Railways including adapting to Indian terrain and climatic conditions such as hot and humid climate and mountainous sections. To meet the freight demand of Indian railways, Indian railway freight volume is large and requires wider track gauge to carry greater weight. Compatible with India’s existing railway infrastructure, much of the Indian railway system was built during the colonial period using broad gauge. The specifications and technical parameters of Indian standard rails are mainly formulated by the Indian Railways and are supervised and implemented by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
